Biogas Processing Overview

Under anaerobic conditions, the organic matter present in organic wastes and wastewaters is converted into a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, other trace gases, vapor and a small amount of excess sludge. When the process is carried out under controlled conditions, the biogas produced can be safely captured and utilized, for the further environmental and economic benefit of your company.

Converting your waste into energy will reduce your company’s carbon footprint and dependency on fossil fuel sources. Some industries generate waste with high concentrations of organic contaminants and can generate sufficient amount of biogas to cover their factory’s energy needs fully.

Why is biogas conditioning necessary before utilization?

Typical biogas contains 60-85% methane and is a valuable source of energy. Besides methane, the gaseous fraction can contain various concentrations of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and other gases, and is fully saturated with moisture.

During transmission of the biogas from source to the point of use, the pipelines can be exposed to lower ambient temperatures that will cause the water vapor to condense. Such conditions affect the formation of corrosive compounds, including carbonic and sulfuric acids. Their presence can significantly speed up the corrosion of the gas collection/distribution system and its various components.

To protect against the deterioration of, and damage to, the overall gas utilization system, the biogas should be dried, and various impurities have to be sufficiently removed before it can be used as a fuel in electrical power generators, fuel cells, boilers and/or as a vehicle fuel.

Throughout the years, GWE has developed systems that allow for continuous use of 100% of the produced biogas without the requirement for costly and often-troublesome biogas storage systems. Our scrubbing and drying processes remove sulfur and humidity from the biogas at low operating cost.

Our biogas handling systems start at the exit of the anaerobic digester and continue all the way to the delivery of renewable energy in the form of hot water, steam, electricity, or renewable natural gas (RNG) at your factory or pipeline.

SULFURIX™

There are several methods by which biogas can be scrubbed, including absorbent media, biological treatment, and chemical systems. GWE offers two proprietary technologies that will efficiently desulfurize your biogas stream, as well as conventional activated carbon filters for tertiary polishing of the gas when very low H2S levels are required.

GASODRIX™

In case the biogas is used as fuel in electrical power generators, there are limits imposed on the humidity of the biogas at the inlet of the engines (usually 70 – 80%), in order to avoid damage to the engines. The GASODRIX™ biogas dryer package unit used consists of a stainless steel biogas/refrigerant heat exchanger and a refrigerant cooling group with a compressor, a condenser, a storage tank, and an evaporator.

CALORIX™ - for biogas reuse

CALORIX

The CALORIX™ direct-fired wastewater heater is an innovative solution for efficient wastewater heating, without the use of boilers and heat exchangers. It can be set up to operate on multiple single fuels, or to blend biogas with an alternate fuel, in a dual-fuel blend scenario. The CALORIX™ system is delivered as a complete stainless-steel tank unit, with all equipment mounted on and within the CALORIX™ included.
